fix r3822
Solaris strerror() invalid error code behaviour depends on version:
    Solaris 10 returns "Unknown error" and sets errno to EINVAL,
    Solaris 9 returns "Unknown error" and leaves errno intact,
    Solaris 2 returns NULL.
